The Turkish authorities carried out an extensive operation against the IS. 161 people were detained across the country.

The Turkish police detained 161 projected members of the Islamic State terrorist organization last week, the Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Friday. According to the AP report, TASR reports this.

The detained persons were active within this group and provided their financial support, the Minister said in the social network X. Police detained them in 38 Turkish provinces, including Ankara and Istanbul. Yerlikaya claims that the police have seized illegal firearms, IS documents and digital materials.

Previous police interventions

In July this year, the Turkish authorities detained 153 expected IS members in the nationwide raids.

The IS has taken a number of attacks in Turkey over the past decade. This jihadist group is also associated with the bloodiest assassination in Turkey, when in October 2015 more than 100 people died in Ankara Peace Assembly.

Effect IS at the border with Syria

Turkey has a 800-kilometer border with Syria, where the IS entered the May attack on the police station in the city of Majadin. It was the first IS attack on the Syrian security forces from the overthrow of Bashar Assad, which occurred in December 2024.
