The European Union (EU) could be completely cut off from Russian natural gas within six to 12 months and replace it with liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US, the US Energy Minister Chris Wright said on Friday. TASR reports this based on Reuters report.
The United States announced its opinion this week to EU representatives, Wright told Reuters. The US Minister spoke about the end of energy purchases from Russia on Thursday (11 September) in Brussels with the Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. The EU is negotiating on legislative proposals for the gradual termination of the import of Russian oil and gas by January 2028, while the prohibition of short -term contracts should enter into force next year.
Rapid gas replacement
“I think it could be easily achieved within 12 months, maybe within six months,” Wright said. “I certainly expressed the opinion that we could do it faster. On the US side we could do it faster and I think it would be good if these dates moved even more. I don’t know if it happened, but we discussed it,” he said with reference to his meeting with the European Commissioner.
