Mulching of the ground is an important procedure that helps protect the root system of plants. In addition, it allows you to stop moisture in the ground, and also hinders weed development. In winter, it is particularly important because it helps protect the lower parts of flowers and shrubs from frost. In spring, it spreads, which enriches the substrate.

The choice is quite large, but it is worth keeping in mind that not everything will work. Above all Avoid pine needles (if there are few of them, they can be taken into account) and fresh sawdust. In addition, all materials on which you can see the symptoms of diseases, e.g. cytosporosis manifested by brown spots on the bark, should not be used. This is a quick way to spread bacteria and fungi into other plants.

What will be the best choice? Leaves, crushed straw, fine pine bark and wood chips will work. You can also use compost. These materials will spread to spring and positively affect the structure of the substrate. Mixing them with compost will allow for the supply of additional minerals to the soil that will strengthen the root system and support the development of microorganisms, useful for the plant.

It’s best to do it with the beginning of autumn, in September or early October. It is important to perform this treatment before the first, stronger frosts. Preferably a day, two after rain, so that the soil is moist. It is better not to wait with it, because if the ground is cold, the litter will not play an adequate insulation role. In turn, the location of it too early will make the roots have worse access to water.

Before lining the litter, it is worth removing the weed from the ground and slightly loosen the soil. If it is very dry, it can also be hydrated. The litter should be from 5 to 8 cm thick. This will ensure optimal protection against frost and at the same time will not limit the Earth access to air.
