The crime in Memphis forced Trump to action.
US President Donald Trump signed a order on Monday to deploy the National Guard soldiers in Memphis, Tennessee as part of the latest phase of his fight against crime. He added that it would be a replica of our extremely successful efforts from Washington, USA, where he deployed the National Guard in August, which, according to him, reduced crime in the city. TASR informs about this on the basis of AFP and AP.
“This operation will be involved in the National Guard, the Federal Investigation Office (FBI)” and other federal agencies, Trump told journalists at a solemn signing in an oval office, attended by the Republican governor Tennessee Bill Lee.
Trump’s plans
He added that this is “very important in view of the current crime”. “We will probably continue in Chicago,” Trump confirmed.
The Minister of Justice Pam Bondiová also said at the solemn signature that the federal agencies would use the “very successful” model from Washington to “re -ensure security in Memphis”.
Governor Tennessee Lee welcomed this measure and said he was “tired of how crime hinders the development of the great city of Memphis”. Trump spoke about the deployment of the National Guard in Memphis last week on Friday.
Crime in the US
Shortly before Trump’s announcement, the White House on social networks said that the total crime in Memphis is higher than the national average, AP said.
According to the agency, police in the city recently announced a decline in all the main categories of crime in the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period in previous years. Total crime has reached the lowest level over the last 25 years, while the number of murders has reached the lowest level in the last six years, the police said.
Despite this decline in Memphis for years, there have been problems with violence associated with weapons. In 2023 the city recorded a record number of more than 390 murders, recalls AP.
