The UN said on Monday, the 15th, that it considers “worrying” the fact that the visas of the Brazilian delegation that will go to New York to the General Assembly have not yet been fully granted. Amid the political clash with the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva government, US President Donald Trump has questioned the granting of diplomatic visas to the Brazilian delegation after denying them to the representatives of Palestine.
“Obviously, it is worrying. We hope the visas will be delivered, as we emphasize in the case of Palestinian delegation,” said Stéphane Dujaric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The Guterres spokesman also stressed that the Trump government has obligations to fulfill, as a country in the United Nations in New York. “The headquarters agreement requires the US, our host government to facilitate travel to the united states of people who have business in front of this organization,” said Dujaric.
The government Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has already protested by diplomatic channels, as the Estadão showed. The case was taken to an internal UN committee on Friday, the 12th, and also discussed with US authorities. One week from Lula’s trip, Itamaraty confirmed that not all members of the Brazilian delegation also received a visa for activities linked to the general debate of the UN General Assembly. A balance was not presented.

Lula intends to take off on Saturday, the 20th, NY and participate in official activities before the general debate. One of them will be a conference in defense of the creation and formal recognition of the Palestinian State. The Brazilian president will have a meeting with guterres on Tuesday, the 23rd, minutes before opening the high level of debants in the UN plenary. Then Trump will occupy the main podium.
Diplomats consider that the US government should slow the release of visas, a form of embarrassment to the Lula government, but in the end will authorize them. Still, there may be problems with landing on American soil.
