Video Challenge: How will it be used in Brazilian football? What matches?

Decisive duels of the Paulista Cup will have an unprecedented arbitration technology in Brazilian football. The FPF (Paulista Football Federation) said it will implement the unprecedented “video challenge”, which will allow team coaches to “challenge” the decisions of arbitration through Replay.

The news will be present in the semifinals of the Paulista Cup 2025, tournament organized by the entity that gives a place in the Brazilian Cup and next year’s Serie D. The technology will be tested at the return games of the competition.

The news was passed on to the four clubs involved (XV of Piracicaba, Commercial, Spring and Grêmio Prudente) during the Technical Council held on the morning of Monday (15/09). The model was tested by FIFA in grassroots competitions, such as last year’s under-20 women’s World Cup.

“Video Challenge”: How it works and when it will be requested

The tool, called Football Video Support (FVS), video support for football in Portuguese, allows the coach to request the review when he understands that there was an error in four situations:

  • gol;
  • penalty;
  • Direct red card;
  • Card applied to the wrong player.

Each technician starts the game entitled to two requests. The signs will be from a gesture turning the finger in the air, handing the fourth referee a request card.

Following, the main referee goes to the bedside cabin to watch the bid with the help of a replay operator.

From observation in the equipment, the referee has the autonomy to maintain or change the field decision from the review. If the challenge is successful, the coach does not lose the request used.

Unlike VAR’s traditional system, there are no video referees. The tool consists of a cabin on the edge of the lawn and a replay operator.
