A group of five American senators presented a resolution to overthrow additional 40% tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump government on products imported from Brazil.
The initiative, which brings together names of different parties, reflects the growing dissatisfaction of the congress with the economic and political effects of the measure.
The proposal was filed under the justification that the White House violated the limits of the International Economic Emergency Powers Law (IEEPA), used by Trump to justify the tariff increase.

Parliamentarians maintain that there is no economic emergency involving Brazil, as the trade balance favors the United States.
Signatories include Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (New York), also Democrats Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire), Tim Kaine (Virginia) and Ron Wyden (Oregon), as well as Republican Rand Paul (Kentucky).
Shaheen and Kaine had already anticipated Brazilian parliamentarians, who would present the resolution after the recess.

Although he classified Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) trial in Brazil as “persecution”, the senator stressed that this should not interfere within the American constitutional limits.
Schumer, in turn, accused Trump of manipulating the law to meet political interests.
