Brazil vetoed US participation in the “Democracy Always” meeting, scheduled for Tuesday (23) in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The information was published this Saturday (20) first by the newspaper Folha de São Paulo.

The meeting is organized by Brazil, Spain, Uruguay, Colombia and Chile, according to the newspaper, and occurs for the second time parallel to the UN Assembly. Last year, when the meeting was promoted only by Brazil and Spain, about 30 countries were present – among them, the US.

The purpose of the initiative is to discuss ways to preserve and strengthen the democratic environment. According to the newspaper, a source of the Brazilian government stated that only countries considered democratic in Brazil were invited.

Estadão/Broadcast also found that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government understands that Donald Trump’s management represents precisely what this group tries to fight.

The episode occurs amid an aggravation of commercial and diplomatic tensions between the two countries. In July, President Donald Trump announced a 50% rate on Brazilian products, justifying the measure based on the judgment of.

Last week, President Lula published an article in criticizing Washington’s decision. He argued that tariffs are not the solution to commercial disputes and reinforced the Brazilian commitment to multilateralism.

According to Estadão/Broadcast, the Brazilian government should not now try any meeting with US representatives to discuss the tariff or even the relationship between the two nations.
