The measure represents a significant turn in the country’s foreign policy, which so far conditioned this step to a broader peace agreement.
According to the government, the decision seeks to preserve the perspective of a solution of two states, considered threatened by the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza range and the advance of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

The change occurs after Starmer has given a deadline until September for Israel to accept a ceasefire in Gaza and commit to long-term negotiations.
As this did not happen, London understood that the “time to act” came, according to government sources.
The measure, however, faces strong resistance. The Israeli government, relatives of Hamas hostages and part of the British conservative opposition condemned the gesture.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the “reward for terror” recognition, while hostage relatives warned that the decision could make negotiations difficult to release the abducted. United States President Donald Trump also spoke out against the initiative.
Despite the criticism, London points out that the legitimacy of the Palestinian state cannot be hostage to Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by the United Kingdom.
The government argues that Palestinians’ right to self -determination is independent of the group’s performance and that the measure reinforces the need for a negotiated solution for the conflict.

Countries such as Portugal, France, Canada and Australia have also expressed intent on recognizing Palestine, while Spain, Ireland and Norway formalized recognition in 2024.
Today, about 75% of UN members officially recognize the Palestinian state, although it still has no defined boundaries, established capital or total control of its territory.
