The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, approved a bill that restores a controversial bonus to civil police officers who kill suspects of crimes during operations.
The initiative is part of a proposal from the government of Rio de Janeiro, chaired by conservative Claudio Castro, defender of a hard -based policy against crime, to restructure the body of the Civil Police, responsible for investigating crimes.
On Tuesday, the State Chamber urgently analyzed the project, which will now continue to approve by the governor.
The state deputies have incorporated, however, several amendments to the original text, including the Civil Police agent the right to receive a financial reward for individual merits.
Bonus value between 10% and 150% of salary
The bonus will be granted in cases of “seizure of large -caliber or restricted weapons in police operations” and “in situations involving the neutralization of criminals.”
O bonus value, according to the project, may vary between 10% and 150% of the salary of the award -winning agent, respecting the constitutional ceiling.
The amendment was driven by conservative spectrum legislators, two of them from the Liberal Party, led by former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest and sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted coup d’état.
“We know that Rio is an unusual state, so we present a proposal that encourages our police, who leave home leaving those who love the most to protect people who don’t even know. It is no more than a way to value these police,” said Deputy Marcelo Dino, one of the bonus prosecutors.
