Chalino Sánchez’s story is one of the most tragic and engaging in the world of Mexican music, marked by a combination of gross talent, violence and tragedy.

Born Rosalino Sánchez Félix on August 30, 1960, in Sinaloa, Mexico, Chalino is a legendary figure in the race genre, folk songs that often tell stories of heroism, rebellion, drug trafficking, and the life of drug traffickers.

He grew up in extreme poverty and, at age 15, after his father’s death, moved to California with his family. There, he began his musical career, initially performing at parties and local events, earning life as an immigrant worker before his takeoff music.

His connection with crime began early, motivated by a personal tragedy. As a teenager, in Sinaloa, his sister went to a local man, leading Chalino to take revenge.

He killed the alleged aggressor and, consequently, had to flee Mexico to avoid reprisals. This act of revenge would not only mark the beginning of its legend but would also establish a pattern of violence that would follow you for the rest of your short life. In 1992 there would be one of Chalino’s career and darkest episodes.

During a concert in Culiacán, Sinaloa, the hometown of many powerful Mexican drug cartels, Chalino received a threatening note while on stage. The note came from a cartel member, and in the message said that this would be his last presentation.

This was not the first time Chalino had faced dangers; His fame had made him a target in a world where music and crime often intersect. Despite the threat, he continued his presentation, demonstrating a bravery that was already a trademark.

After the show, in the early hours of May 16, 1992, Chalino was approached by gunmen who identified themselves as police.

He was forced into a car and was never seen alive. His body was found later that day, with torture marks and heads in his head, next to a road.
