The Mercado continues to expand its presence in Portugal and, this time, it is in southern Lisbon that the Spanish brand marks territory. October will be a month filled, with three new openings, including the debut in Palmela, in the Setúbal district, already confirmed.
According to a statement issued by the group and quoted by the new store in Palmela opens doors on October 30, at 09h00, at Rua de São Julião, No. 3.
The space will be similar to the remaining units of the brand’s efficient store model and will have a sales area of about 1,900 square meters.
A south reinforcement of Lisbon
The opening in Palmela represents an important step in the market growth strategy in Portugal. “This new opening represents an important step in reinforcing the presence of the Mercado in Setúbal district, getting even closer to its ‘bosses’ (customers),” can be read in the company’s statement.
According to the same publication, the store will create about 90 new jobs, with no term contracts from the first day. The company stresses that all employees benefit from paid training, reinforcing the commitment to stable and quality employment.
Three inaugurations in October
Before Palmela, Mercado has already scheduled two more inaugurations for this month. On October 9 will be inaugurated the St. Gens store in Matosinhos, and 16 will be Frielas’s turn in Loures. All openings happen at 09h00, in a particularly intense calendar for the Spanish supermarket chain.
Lisbon receives Mercado in November
The bet is not exhausted in October. Mercado has confirmed that November will mark the arrival of the first stores in the city of Lisbon. Two supermarkets will be inaugurated, one in Alta de Lisboa and one in Quinta do Lambert, at Lumiar.
These spaces will generate 180 new jobs, with the same conditions of stability and permanent contracts.
According to the publication, the recruitment process for these stores is already underway, with vacancies for supermarket operator and maintenance assistant.
The functions include a period of paid training, with all expenses guaranteed by the company, from food to transport and stay, including travel to biweekly.
Five years in Portugal
The Mercado celebrates five years of activity in Portugal with a robust balance. It already has more than 60 stores and about 7,000 jobs created.
In 2024, he invested 219 million euros in the national territory, registered a sales volume of 1,778 million and contributed 237 million euros in taxes, through the Sister Supermarkets, based in Vila Nova de Gaia.
For 2025, the company projects to open ten more stores and invest more than 157 million euros, consolidating its position to both north and south of the country.
