The State of Illinois and the city of They filed a lawsuit on Monday (6) to prevent the national guard’s performance in the region, after the president of the, authorizing the sending of 300 agents to contain protests against their immigration policy. According to the Attorney General of Illinois, the Federal Government did not present legal basis that justifies the mobilization of troops. He stated that the presence of the military would “only cause more confusion, would increase distrust in the police and impair the state economy.”

The Trump government has classified the demonstrations contrary to ICE’s actions as “violent disorders and anarchy.” On social networks, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed support for lawsuits, calling Trump’s decision “illegal and unconstitutional.”

“We will not allow federal forces to invade our state without justification,” wrote Pritzker on X (former Twitter). Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson also positioned himself against the measure. “We reject any attempt to occupy Chicago,” he said, also by X.

In addition to President Trump, the lawsuit includes as defendants US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, internal security secretary Kristi Noem and Army leader Daniel P. Driscoll.

Submission of the National Guard rekindles the clash between local democratic authorities and the republican federal government on state autonomy and the use of military force in civil territory, in a moment of growing political and social tension in the United States.
