The openings of new commercial spaces continue to set the pace of expansion for several international brands in Portuguese territory. Among the companies that have invested heavily in the country is one of the best-known supermarket chains of Spanish origin, Mercadona, which opened another store in the north of Portugal.

Mercadona opened a new supermarket in Matosinhos this Thursday, October 9th, located at 3867 Rua de São Gens. This is the brand’s third space in the municipality and also represents an important milestone: it is now the chain’s 25th store in the Porto district, consolidating the company’s presence in the region.

According to Sofia Cardoso, director of External Relations at Mercadona in the North Zone, cited by the specialized lifestyle magazine NiT, “since Mercadona’s arrival in Portugal, the Porto district has welcomed us with open arms and it is with great pride that we can, with this opening, celebrate the milestone of 25 stores in the district”.

The person responsible also highlighted that the company has sought to contribute to the well-being of the communities where it operates. “In this store, the outdoor space was also used to create a public park for the enjoyment of our neighbors and the community,” he said.

New store design

With a sales area of ​​more than 1,900 square meters, the new store was designed to guarantee a broad and functional shopping experience. It has spacious corridors and several specialized sections, including butchers, fishmongers, cold cuts, bakeries and pastries, fruit and vegetables, perfumery, home and pet care, a wine cellar and a ready-to-eat area, equipped with a self-service service and various meal options.

The supermarket also has, according to the same source, 157 parking spaces, two of which are dedicated to charging electric vehicles, a move that reinforces Mercadona’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Mercadona’s presence in Portugal

Since opening its first supermarket in Portugal in 2019, in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia, Mercadona has been growing consistently. It currently employs more than five thousand employees and has stores spread across ten districts: Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Setúbal, Santarém, Viseu, Leiria, Lisbon and Coimbra.

The company’s strategy involves combining efficiency and proximity to the customer, equally valuing investment in fresh products and national suppliers.
