New York Attorney General Letitia James, a figure known for prosecuting the president, was indicted this Thursday (9) for mortgage fraud, as reported by the American press. The indictment was brought before a federal grand jury in Virginia. James, a 66-year-old Democrat, is accused of mortgage fraud related to the acquisition of a property for her niece in Virginia in 2023, according to information from CNN and other US media outlets.
This indictment follows a notable pattern, as another Trump critic, former FBI Director James Comey, was also indicted in the same jurisdiction recently. The cases against James and Comey were led by Lindsey Halligan, a federal prosecutor who was appointed by the Republican president. His appointment occurred after the resignation of his predecessor, who cited a lack of evidence to pursue the charges against both.
The Washington Post newspaper highlighted that Halligan presented the case in person to the grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia. The indictment comes amid an escalation in Donald Trump’s campaign against his political opponents. The former president had publicly pressured Attorney General Pam Bond to take action against James, Comey and other figures he considers enemies.
