Terrorist group still maintains remains of 24 other kidnapped people; Delivery is part of an agreement with Israel negotiated under the mediation of the United States, which came into force on Friday (10)
The bodies of four hostages killed during captivity were delivered this Monday (13) by the Red Cross, the Israeli Army announced. “Four coffins with dead hostages are being escorted by Tzahal forces [Forças Armadas] e do Shin Bet [serviço de segurança interna de Israel] heading to Israel, where they will be transferred to the National Center for Forensic Medicine for the identification process,” said the Israeli Army.
Hamas still holds the remains of another 24 hostages in Gaza, which it agreed to hand over to Israel under the ceasefire agreement negotiated under the mediation of the United States and which came into force on Friday. “Hamas must respect the agreement and take the necessary measures to return all dead hostages,” the army said on Monday. Israel said on Monday that it had released 1,968 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the last 20 living hostages held by the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The day before, Israeli authorities said they anticipate that not all of the dead hostages will be returned on Monday, in which case an “international body” envisaged in the US plan would help locate them, according to the same source. Hamas and its allied militias took 251 hostages during their unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.
