Chief of the São Paulo Executive said he hoped that the federal government would adopt a responsible fiscal course and warned of the risks of the current trajectory of public accounts
The governor of , (Republicans), again denied this Tuesday (14) having acted to overturn the Provisional Measure (MP) that sought alternatives to the increase in the Tax on Financial Operations (). The head of the São Paulo Executive stated that the leader of the PL in the Chamber, (RJ), just wanted to “be kind” by thanking him for the defeat of the federal government in the plenary, and said that they are “taking his name in vain”.
“(Sóstenes) wanted to be kind. The fact is that I am focused here in São Paulo, and this issue is a matter for Congress, right? I think that political articulation is up to the government. It is the government that has the responsibility, right, to approve or not approve matters within Parliament”, said Tarcísio.
The governor’s statements were made after the delivery of a R$63 million housing complex in the west zone of the capital of São Paulo alongside the mayor and ally, (MDB). During his speech, the governor once again criticized the Minister of Finance, with whom he has been in a public dispute. The previous week, Tarcísio had published a video on social media in which he said that the PT member needed to “be ashamed of himself”.
“I think Haddad has a bigger concern for him, which is the fiscal issue. Everyone is worried about Brazil’s fiscal direction,” he said. “We don’t want to have a problem down the road, right? We don’t want to see the country flirting with over-indebtedness, high inflation and, eventually, recession.”
The head of the São Paulo Executive said he hoped that the federal government would adopt a responsible fiscal course, and warned of the risks of the current trajectory of public accounts. According to him, the country has already raised around R$3 trillion by October, which represents approximately 19.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (), but is still expected to record a primary deficit this year.
Tarcísio noted that the nominal deficit has increased the debt/GDP ratio, which he classified as “dangerous for the country”. “Adjustments are necessary, and we hope that these adjustments are made”, he added.
The controversy began after PT parliamentarians stated that the governor had acted, directly or indirectly, to block the MP. Haddad himself reacted publicly, saying that “a state governor acted to the detriment of national interests to protect Faria Lima”, but that, despite this, the federal government “will not harm São Paulo”.
