“It’s very challenging and you have to have resilience”, is what he says Taina Müller43, about making an independent film in Brazil. Recently, the actress, with more than two decades of experience between cinema, series, soap operas and theater, reached the public behind the camera, together with Isis Broken30, in the direction of “Apollo”.
The film, , and awarded in two categories: best documentary feature film and best soundtrack, follows the relationship between Isis and her partner, Lourenzo Gabriel – both trans people – during the pregnancy of their son, Apolo, conceived naturally during the pandemic.
HAS CNNthe actress talks about the balance and main maturity after work. “Rarely, in fact, will it pay off financially. But, the compensation comes from a film lover like me, right? It comes from the immense desire to tell a story, to think that this story deserves to be told and to see it being received by the public. That is the great satisfaction”, he celebrates.
“Otherwise, it’s really a lot of battle,” he jokes. “You have to really want it, because it’s years of work. An independent film, sometimes, lasts five to ten years, with you there, putting energy, commitment. It’s work whose compensation is more linked to passion than to practicality”, he continues.
Although the country is experiencing a beautiful and expressive moment when it comes to national cinema, with great successes such as and other highlights such as and , for Tainá there is still a lack of real appreciation for Brazilian authenticity.
“It’s very cruel for Brazilian cinema, in terms of budget, to compete with foreigners. You get a low budget here, there’s no comparison. The cinematic experience will be different, but still, I think Brazilians need to understand that, following Brazilian cinema is coming into direct contact with something unique and that no one will ever replicate, which is seeing themselves on screen, seeing their culture represented”, he adds.
