The Attorney General of the Republic, rejected this Tuesday (14) the request for preventive detention made by deputies Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) and Talíria Petrone (PSOL-RJ) against also deputy (PL-SP). The request was related to the investigation investigating the role of Eduardo and commentator Paulo Figueiredo in an alleged collaboration with United States authorities to put pressure on during the trial of the coup criminal case, in which former president Jair Bolsonaro was convicted.

In his statement, Gonet stated that parliamentarians do not have procedural legitimacy to request precautionary measures such as arrest. “Despite the diligence with which parliamentarians act, they are not qualified to do so in any of these positions,” wrote the attorney general.

Despite the denial, Gonet indicated that he could, in the future, assess whether there are grounds to request his own precautionary measures, including imprisonment, “at the time he deems appropriate”. The attorney general also rejected Eduardo Bolsonaro’s request to suspend payments of subsidies, quotas and parliamentary funds, highlighting that this type of decision is the responsibility of the Chamber of Deputies, which is already conducting administrative procedures on the case.

The arrest request had been filed in July, when Lindbergh and Talíria alleged that Eduardo Bolsonaro was negotiating with North American authorities to sabotage Brazilian institutions, especially the STF. As evidence, they cited letters and public statements made by the parliamentarian in the United States, where he is on leave from office.

The investigation, reported by minister Alexandre de Moraes, is investigating whether Eduardo Bolsonaro coordinated an international offensive to question the legitimacy of his father’s conviction and put pressure on the Supreme Court. Eduardo and Paulo Figueiredo were denounced for coercion during the process within the scope of this investigation.
