Billionaire fund manager Bill Ackman made a donation of US$1 million (R$5.4 million) to a Super PAC that opposes Zohran Mamdani’s candidacy for mayor of New York, in a last-minute attempt to block the favorite from the polls. The information is from the newspaper Financial Times.
With less than three weeks to go before the election, Mamdani, a “self-declared” democratic socialist, is comfortably leading voting intentions, while former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, appears in second place.

Despite a comfortable lead in the polls, Ackman and other wealthy donors have invested heavily to support Cuomo and weaken Mamdani.
Campaign finance documents show that the “Defend NYC” Super PAC, created by a former Donald Trump aide, received the donation from Ackman, followed by a $100,000 contribution from Third Point founder Daniel Loeb.
Mamdani has supported himself mostly with small donations, benefiting from New York campaign laws that encourage engagement with ordinary voters, while Cuomo has relied on large contributions from special interests.

The progressive candidate, who surprised by winning the Democratic primary in June, proposes expanding public services, such as free transportation and subsidized daycare, financed by tax increases.
His positions, however, divide the party and draw criticism from Republicans, including President Donald Trump, who called him a “communist” and threatened to cut federal funding for the city if Mamdani is elected.
