Viral video of confrontation between student and teacher is a traditional practice at UTAD

Portuguese student faces university professor who refused justified absence due to sick child

The video that circulated on social media and showed an alleged argument between a student and a university professor, which ended with insults and applause in the room, is after all nothing more than an act.

The images, recorded at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), went viral again in recent days, leading thousands of people to believe that the episode was real.

The video shows a student trying to justify an absence for having stayed at home to take care of her child, something that the teacher rejects with comments considered offensive, such as “if I wanted to have children I couldn’t go to university”. The scene ends with the young woman insulting the teacher and leaving the room, to the applause of her colleagues, in a gesture that on social media was widely praised as an act of courage.

However, it was all just a “ghost class”, a form of traditional UTAD practice in which older students stage unusual situations to surprise the freshmen.

The confirmation that it was an act led the social network X to place a context warning in the publications, clarifying that the episode was not real.
