According to Marinho, the absence of government representatives from the hearings shows that Lula is actually interested in the tariffs being applied by the Donald Trump government, so that the fact can be used by the PT member for electoral purposes.

“It is important to show that the PT’s narrative is just that, a narrative. They are willing to do anything to win the election, allow tariffs to be imposed, so that they can say that Brazil was harmed, that the Bolsonaro family contributed to this”, says Marinho.

For the campaign coordinator, the correct move would be for the Brazilian government to participate in the hearing, as the most interested in the topic.

Itamaraty, however, says it maintains contact with the Donald Trump government through traditional diplomatic channels, in order to avoid the imposition of new tariffs.

“Either there was deliberate omission on the part of the government, so they could overcome the problem, or the Brazilian diplomatic corps is a disaster by not participating in these hearings. I prefer to believe in the first hypothesis”, says Marinho.
