A defended this Thursday (16) as “legitimate” his purchases of and called the pressure from the president of the Donald Trump, for the country to stop trade. “China maintains normal and legitimate economic, trade and energy cooperation with several countries around the world, including Russia,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian, commenting on the statements made on Wednesday by the American president.

Trump said he had received a promise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would stop buying Russian oil as a measure of punishment for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. India has neither confirmed nor denied the claim so far. “Now I need to convince China to do the same,” Trump added.

“The actions of the United States are a typical example of unilateral intimidation and economic coercion,” criticized the Chinese diplomacy spokesman. “These actions seriously undermine international economic and trade standards,” he added. China says it is not a party to the conflict but Kiev and Western powers accuse Beijing of having offered diplomatic and economic support to Russia since the start of the invasion of the neighboring country in February 2022.
