Barroso serves his last day as STF minister this Friday

Minister, who retired early, assumed his seat at the Supreme Court in 2013, after being nominated by then President Dilma Rousseff, and could remain at the Court until March 2033, when he would reach the age limit of 75 years.

According to the decision, it comes into effect this Saturday (18). Barroso announced that he would bring forward his retirement last Thursday (9). He took up his seat on the STF in 2013, after being nominated by President Dilma Rousseff, and could remain on the Court until March 2033, when he would reach the age limit of 75 years.

On Wednesday (15), the minister felt unwell and was taken to Hospital Sírio Libanês, in Brasília. He was in Court when there was a drop in pressure. The minister underwent tests and was discharged the following day. With the minister’s departure, Lula is looking for a replacement for the vacancy. Among the main candidates are the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, and the former president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

The PT member met with court ministers on Tuesday (14) at Palácio da Alvorada, to discuss the succession. As Estadão revealed, some of the judges disagree with Lula’s preference for Messiah. The minister the only woman currently on the Federal Supreme Court (STF), took advantage of the debate on the subject to reinforce her support for the presence of more women in the country’s highest Court. The position was given this Thursday (16).

During an event promoted by the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo (), Cármen highlighted the importance of female representation in all spaces of society. Cármen Lúcia’s statements are in line with movements within the Judiciary and civil society that defend the appointment of a woman to the vacancy left by Barroso. The minister himself has already stated that he “gladly sees” the possibility of a successor.
