The city of Budapest has been chosen as the venue for the upcoming bilateral summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. for a simple reason – Hungary is the only country in Europe that is following the path of peace. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced this via the social network Facebook on Saturday, TASR writes, according to a report by the MTI agency.
“Why Budapest? Since yesterday, many people around the world have been asking and speculating why Hungary became the meeting place between the American and Russian presidents. The answer is simple: we are the only ones in Europe who remain on the path to peace,” wrote Orbán on Facebook.
“We never lectured anyone, neither when they were in the government nor in the opposition. We have never closed the channels for negotiation,” said the Hungarian prime minister, adding that it is difficult to convince someone of something when we do not talk to them.
According to Orbán, Hungary has consistently and persistently supported peace, cooperation instead of confrontation and mutual respect instead of stigma for years. “This is the way to peace,” wrote.
“Today, Hungary is a country in Europe where there is a good chance that American-Russian negotiations will lead to peace. And where European aspects can even be demonstrated. Brussels has isolated itself, but we will continue to negotiate,” concluded Orbán.
