Italians consider this tourist attraction in Portugal one of the most disappointing in the world

Lisbon has established itself as one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Europe, recognized for its gastronomy and vibrant atmosphere. However, In the city center, Time Out Market, a tourist and gastronomic attraction, was classified as one of the most disappointing experiences in the world, according to a study by the Italian company Radical Storage, specialized in travel. The analysis, which evaluated more than 95 thousand comments in 200 places to visit, placed the Lisbon market in fourth place among those that most frustrate tourists.

Time Out Market opened in 2014 in the Mercado da Ribeira building and quickly became a stopping point for anyone visiting Lisbon, according to Islands Magazine. It brings together 26 food stalls, eight bars, several stores and a cooking academy. The concept consisted of bringing together in one place the main references of Portuguese gastronomy.

Over time, growing affluence transformed the experience. Long queues, constant noise and difficulty in finding a seat at a table are frequent reasons for complaints, especially between June and August, when the place is busiest.

Between success and saturation

The international study highlighted this contrast. What started as a practical way to get to know national flavors ended up becoming a tiring experience. Several visitors described the environment as confusing and too focused on tourism, moving away from the typical tranquility of a Portuguese meal, says the same source.

Despite this, this tourist and gastronomic attraction continues to bring together a wide variety of restaurants and award-winning dishes. The location, next to Cais do Sodré, contributes to the daily movement. The market is open every day from 10 am to midnight.

When to visit

Recommends visiting the market during off-peak hours, when the space becomes more accessible. Another option is to take part in the cooking classes that take place in the central kitchen, a calmer way to get to know Portuguese cuisine.

Those who prefer to avoid crowds can opt for the taverns and family restaurants spread across Lisbon. According to the same source, in these places, traditional recipes and the convivial spirit that defines Portuguese cuisine are maintained.

Tradition that endures

Among the flavors that symbolize Lisbon, the pastel de nata stands out. Fábrica da Nata and Manteigaria are well-known references, but the Pastéis de Belém confectionery continues to keep the original recipe, created in the 19th century.

Even with criticism, Time Out Market continues to be sought after by those who want to try several Portuguese specialties in a single place. Still, for many, the true gastronomic experience of the capital can be found at the smaller tables and in lesser-known spaces.
