Debordelization or a four-week cleaning challenge: Get rid of the mess before Advent begins

If you start now, you’ll be done before Advent. And that counts. Or do you prefer Christmas grunting full of dash and fury in your eyes? In order to enjoy the holidays comfortably, you don’t have to compromise on the cleanliness of your home.

Start the challenge as soon as possible

Who says the big clean has to come with Christmas? British editor Millie Hurst of Homes & Gardens came up with a simple but ingenious challenge. Just share cleaning already four weeks and handle it calmly before Advent. There’s only one goal, and that’s to have the home ready before the candy smells and the lights flash. You will have to earn that too.

Why is this a good idea? Because Advent should belong to family, baking and the smell of cinnamon, not the stress of cleaning. At least that’s how we paint it every year, and in the end the deed went away.

By decluttering in time, you’ll have time for gift shopping, city walks, and cozy candlelit evenings. And the bonus? In a clean and clear space, life is simply better, calmer, freer, more pleasant. But it is necessary to start on time.

How to get started: Small steps, big effect

Start with a plan. Take a diary and mark four weeks before Advent (more or less is not a problem). Each week you dedicate one part of the home. Get ready three bags or boxes and label them with words keep, donate, throw away. And implement a simple rule. You only want to touch everything once! When you take the thing in hand, decide immediately what to do with it. No back-and-forth or what-if thinking.

Don’t try to do everything at once. 30 minutes a day is enough, but regularly. Put on some music, open the windows, and let the cleaning have an impact and fresh energy. If you really don’t know what to do with a piece of clothing or decoration, give them some advice to the fourth boxwhich you are leave it for later. It’s a departure from the one-touch rule, but you should only use this option on rare occasions. Ultimately, though, you’ll still have to make a decision when you’re done cleaning.

How to keep order and clean properly? Try adopting the tips from the following post.

Week 1: Study room or work corner

Start where papers and cables pile up. Clean the desk, sort documents, disconnect unnecessary equipment. The space where you work has a major influence on the peace of mind. A clean desk means a clean mind.

Week 2: Kitchen and Pantry

Open all the cabinets and face the truth. What you haven’t used in a year, you probably won’t use again. Donate dishes that are just taking up space and check both foods and spices. Throw away the expired ones, organize the rest in clear containers. You free up space for Christmas baking and new supplies.

Week 3: Bedroom and wardrobe

Here, what you haven’t worn all year can serve someone else. Sort clothes, put seasonal things in boxes. The bedroom should become a peaceful haven. Forget the piles of clothes, the chaos of all sorts of little things and makeup.

If you have children, a similar event will await you in their room. It is not an easy task, but you will probably only have clothes that are current and wearable.

Week 4: Bathroom and sundries

Throw out expired cosmetics, reduce the number of opened shampoos. Organize the cabinets according to the type of products, treat yourself to a little eucalyptus fragrance. A small change, a big feeling of cleanliness. When you want to clean up around here for Christmas, just wipe down all the surfaces and you’re done!
