Emerson Leão criticized the current generation of Brazilian coaches and commented on the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti at the helm of the Seleção.
During an interview with CNN Esportes S/A This Sunday (19), the former goalkeeper and coach stated that he “has nothing against the Italian coach”, but said he was “disappointed with the new generation of coaches”.
Regarding , Leão highlighted fluctuations.
“One friendly went very well, the other was followed by disappointment. And he was there on the bench wanting to communicate with difficulties”, he assessed.
The former goalkeeper believes that the Italian coach will need time and immersion in the team’s environment.
I think he’s going to have to spend a lot more time concentrating, like we did back when we were champions. We spent two, three months focused, everyone together with a final goal to achieve, and we achieved it. And those who were in doubt whether they were very good players, ended up at the end of training for the World Cup, knowing that they were good. So, his work will be very painful, very difficult and now we will see if he will be accepted without defeat.
The former coach concluded by saying that Ancelotti’s success will depend on the collaboration of everyone who works with him in Brazil.
“I think he’s going to have a lot, not a little, a lot of difficulty. And everyone who works with him — Brazilians, athletes, managers, coaches, assistants, players — has to collaborate. Because this process is going to get worse and worse,” he said.
From Europe to Brazil
Asked if the fact that Ancelotti is a foreigner could make working with athletes who play in Europe easier, Leão disagreed.
“I don’t think it helps much, no. Because today, with the media, you watch all the games you want every week and get an individual opinion on each athlete. Now, these few people, few times. Why didn’t he call up a lot of people playing in Brazil? Because he doesn’t know much”, he said.
Leão also compared the challenges of managing a European club and the Brazilian team.
“Ah, Real Madrid is a club. You are the owner of it, the club, responsible for it. Selection, you have an entire nation against you or in favor of you. So, selection is much more difficult, because there you play against the clubs”, he highlighted.
History together
Leão highlighted that the attack on the Italian is not personal and that he even played with the manager.
“I want you to pay close attention to what I’m going to say. I have nothing against Ancelotti, right? I played against him a few times in the Italian national team. The last time I played against him, he even scored against me, but we won 4-1, we were champions of the tournament”, he said.
For the former goalkeeper, at the time, Ancelotti was a good midfielder, like Casemiro or Dunga.
Where are the Brazilian technicians?
Leão stated that .
“Now, all the clubs, the biggest ones at least, are being managed by only foreigners. Where are they? Where is Brazil? Where are the Brazilian coaches? Where are the people who run this show?”, he asked.
According to the former goalkeeper, the presence of foreigners in the country’s main clubs highlights the lack of local protagonism.
I am highly disappointed and sad with this generation of new coaches who allow something like this, not being able to show much more impact, much more right, much more quality to be part of the Brazilian team.
