John Hight, the president of Wizards of the Coast & Digital Gaming, said in an interview with The Game Business portal what every fan of the Baldur’s Gate series has already expected: the series will happen eventually, even if it is not the focus or the next game in the Dungeons & Dragons franchise.
We couldn’t contain our excitement and decided to separate some of the things we want to see in the new game.
Customized rules for different campaigns
You probably already know, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game based on the world and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons. Therefore, all of its gameplay follows the rules of the 5e version of the board game.
However, it would be cool to play the next game in the franchise with the possibility of customizing some rules, creating totally different experiences with each campaign. This is something common for those who play D&D and the next game could adapt this “tradition”.
More data and randomness in the scenario
Dice rolling and randomness play a key role in Dungeons & Dragons and can completely change a campaign.
I suffered from this in one of my campaigns, when I passed by Aunt Ethel’s lair (the Witch from Act 1). One part of the lair is a path full of poisonous vapors that hide explosive plants, which your character may not see if the die roll is unfavorable.
I felt like I was playing , for example. If you don’t know: Mines is a casino game from Spribe that has 25 pieces face down on the board. The player must choose a piece on his guess, trying to escape the explosive mines.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, this randomness brings an element of unpredictability that is typical of tabletop RPG sessions, and we want to see more of that in the next game in the series.
Classes and races missing from Baldur’s Gate 3
It’s undeniable that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a huge game, with a lot of content. But the game also left out some classes and races that are important within the 5e Dungeons & Dragons system.
In Baldur’s Gate 4, we expect all classes, subclasses and races from the world created by Wizards of the Coast to be adapted, giving the player more options. And speaking of which…
The 17 thousand endings promised for game 3
One of the pieces of marketing that caught the most attention in Baldur’s Gate 3 was the promise that the game would have 17,000 endings. In fact, it was one of the elements that helped the game reach the number of units sold.
However, in reality, this is not the case: there are 17,000 paths, but they lead to a much smaller set of closures.
That said, Baldur’s Gate 4 could deliver on its promise. After all, it would be a lot of fun to try to find as many endings as possible within the game.
Baldur’s Gate 4 doesn’t have a release date yet
Whether our wishes are fulfilled or not, the truth is that Baldur’s Gate 4 will take a while to arrive. The game will not be developed by Larian Studios and Hasbro, owner of the brand, has not yet chosen a development company.
Only after this should the creation of the game begin and the development cycle, which takes a few years, will begin to run.
