Gasoline at €1.20/l: in this place you will find the cheapest fuel in the Iberian Peninsula (and it is not in Spain)

With fuel prices remaining among the issues that weigh most heavily on families’ budgets, any difference in the value per liter continues to generate attention. There is, however, a singular point on the map of the Iberian Peninsula where the price of fuel is clearly lower than that in Portugal and Spain. In Gibraltar, a liter of petrol costs around 1.20 euros.

The local operator, responsible for several filling stations in the territory, confirms on its website that simple gasoline currently costs 1.069 pounds per liter, which corresponds to approximately 1.20 euros. Even taking into account exchange rate variations, this is a value that is consistently lower than the fuel prices charged in Portugal and Spain.

The difference is due to Gibraltar’s own fiscal policy. The taxes applied to petroleum products are lower than those in neighboring countries, which explains why the territory has become an attractive destination for those crossing the border in search of more affordable prices.

Border control

According to the official Visit Gibraltar portal, border control is mandatory, as Gibraltar is not part of the Schengen area. Even so, the passage usually takes place without long delays, allowing visitors to enter, refuel and return to Spain in a short space of time.

In addition to saving on fuel, Gibraltar offers the opportunity to discover a place with narrow streets, colonial buildings and a mix of British and Andalusian accents, as described by the tourist portal Earth Trekkers.

Famous rock

The Rock of Gibraltar is considered the most striking symbol of the region. It rises 426 meters high and is visible from dozens of kilometers away. Formed around 200 million years ago, this limestone structure resulted from tectonic movements, according to the source cited above. The cable car that climbs to the summit offers panoramic views over the Mediterranean and, on clear days, to the African coast.

History of the territory

As the Gibraltar Museum recalls on its website, Gibraltar has been occupied by several civilizations over the centuries: Muslims, Castilians and, since 1713, the British, after the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. Its strategic position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean made it a vital point of defense and trade.

Today, the British presence remains visible in red telephone boxes and local currency. The Gibraltar pound, used in all transactions, reinforces the British character of the territory.

18th century tunnels

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust website also highlights the network of tunnels excavated in the 18th century, used as a defense system and later expanded during the Second World War. Today, many of these tunnels are open to the public and tell part of the territory’s military history, which continues to play a strategic role in the region.
