The president must appoint to the General Secretariat of the Presidency. Initially, the idea would be to bring the government closer to social movements. With the nomination of the PSOL deputy, it becomes increasingly clear that Lula is returning to his origins, that of the old left.

Lula knows this is his last election and he has nothing left to lose. And even if he did, he has no competitive replacement in left field. For him, it no longer makes any difference to wave to the center. Lula really wants to contest his last election at will, speaking to his base, about the issues that interest him.

It wants to carry out political-ideological proselytism, based on national developmental discourse, praising national sovereignty, evidenced by anti-Americanism and the appreciation of “the oil is ours”, with the exploration of the equatorial margin. Forget Marina and the environmental woke agenda. They were useful in the last election; not on this one. It was never out of conviction, but out of electoral convenience.

Lula wants less of a centrão, and more of a union movement. He wants to go back to base, as Mano Brown would say. For this, Boulos falls with a glove. Helps in dialogue, in valuing the root PT.

Some say that Boulos would not help bring in votes, as voters on the left would already vote for Lula anyway. Could it be. But Lula wants to contest his last election as he did in 1989, raising the tone on social inequality, with a more radical “us versus them” discourse, at the same time that he is already thinking about building a “peace and love” Boulos for the future.

In fact, their trajectories are similar. Lula, from the radical unionist, went on to win against a tender Armani in 2002. Boulos, once, was the leader of a property invasion movement; Now, he starts to modulate his speech, with soft speech. He must already be “defending” capitalism.

Will Boulos be Lula’s successor on the left?
