PARIS (Reuters) – Thieves who carried out a daylight raid on the Louvre Museum in Paris made off with jewelry worth an estimated 88 million euros, public prosecutor Laure Beccuau said on Tuesday.
“It is important to remember that this loss is an economic loss, but it is nothing compared to the historical damage caused by this robbery,” the Paris prosecutor told RTL radio.

The robbery happened on Sunday, when four people broke into the Louvre using a crane to break a window. They took objects from a royal jewelry gallery and fled on a motorcycle.
The eight stolen jewelry items include a tiara and earrings from the Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense set from the early 19th century. Empress Eugenie’s crown was found outside the museum, apparently after falling off during her escape.
