Lula says he will run for fourth term during visit to Indonesia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated, in the early hours of this Thursday (23), that he intends to run for a fourth term as President of the Republic.

The statement was made during a speech alongside the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, on a state visit to .

“I’m going to be 80 years old, but you can be sure that I have the same energy as when I was 30 years old. And I’m going to run for a fourth term in Brazil,” said Lula.

“My mandate ends at the end of 2026, but we are prepared to contest other elections”, added the president.

The statement was made after Lula commented and highlighted that he intends to deepen commercial and diplomatic ties between the two countries in the coming years.

The declaration comes amid the president’s international agenda for Southeast Asia. Earlier, Lula and the Indonesian president signed a series of cooperation agreements in areas such as agriculture, mining, energy, science, defense and statistics.

The strategic partnership between the two countries was highlighted by the PT member as “increasingly relevant”.

Relationship with Indonesia and foreign policy

During his speech, Lula said that the relationship between Brazil and Indonesia should be “increasingly productive” and stated that he intends to stimulate private investment between the two countries.

“We want more Brazilian businesspeople visiting Indonesia and more Indonesian businesspeople investing in Brazil,” said the PT member.

He also highlighted that both countries share similar positions in international politics, such as defending the Global South, reform of the UN Security Council and a diplomatic solution to the war in Gaza.
