The Ministry of Justice gave 24 hours for bars suspected of selling adulterated drinks to explain the origin and storage of the products. The measure was announced by the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) after the omission of establishments that did not respond to previous notifications about poisoning cases.

One of the bars investigated, located in the Jardins neighborhood, in São Paulo, was closed by the Health Surveillance after a woman lost her vision after consuming two caipirinhas there. According to the ministry, the lack of clarification from the establishment led to the new charge. If the deadline is not met, those responsible may face administrative proceedings and suffer a fine, in addition to possible suspension of activities.

The capital of São Paulo also installed a Methanol Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) in the City Council to investigate the sale of adulterated drinks. However, only three of the seven councilors attended the first session in person, which generated criticism among parliamentarians given the seriousness of the issue. According to health authorities, Brazil already has 57 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning and 19 are under investigation. Six deaths were recorded in the state of São Paulo, which has the highest number of victims. Experts reinforce the warning for the population to avoid consuming distillates of dubious origin until investigations are completed.
