The fate of the island state of Tuvalu has long been sealed: With rising sea levels, large parts of the Pacific archipelago north of New Zealand, whose highest point is just five meters, could be flooded by as early as 2050. 80 percent of the approximately 11,000 residents have now applied for a visa for Australia. The state has decided to collect the cultural heritage in an online archive now so that it will survive the foreseeable demise. Many other island states and coastal areas face a similar future.
