Dublin – Independent, left-leaning Catherine Connolly was declared winner of Ireland’s presidential election on Saturday. According to official information, the 68-year-old lawyer received more than 63 percent of the votes. She ended up well ahead of her centrist opponent Heather Humphreys from the Fine Gael party, who got 29.5 percent and had already admitted defeat.
