International press views Lula and Trump’s meeting with caution and signs of detente

The summit between Brazilian presidents, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and North American presidents, Donald Trump, held earlier in Malaysia, when they discussed, among other topics, US tariffs on part of Brazilian products exported to the country, gained prominence in the international press.

Among the vehicles that recorded the meeting, the North American The New York Times assessed in an article that Lula and Trump seemed to be agitated and had few answers regarding the negotiations.

The republican’s evasive response to a journalist, right before the meeting, that it was “none of his business” when asked whether the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro would be on the agenda – previously indicated by him as one of the reasons for the tariff against Brazil – was also highlighted in the article.

The newspaper recalled that the Brazilian president said he had brought a detailed agenda, written in English, to deliver to Trump and that he had complained that both were wasting time answering questions from the press before the meeting began.

Lula’s past as a union leader was remembered by the fellow North American The Washington Postaccording to which the American surcharge against Brazil ended up supporting the president’s popularity, recognizing Brazilian resilience to North American impositions to remove the tariff.

Another North American – ABC News – recorded the meeting between the two presidents, remembering that this was Trump’s first trip to Asia since his return to the White House.

The Spanish The Country published that Trump and Lula are finally getting closer, after one of the “worst crises in the relationship between the USA and Brazil in two centuries”. The newspaper recalls that Washington and Beijing are also showing signs of easing on the eve of the Republican’s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, scheduled for next Thursday.

The broadcaster Al Jazeera reinforced the positive nature of the meeting, remembering that Trump classified it as “very good”. He also mentioned the statement by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira that negotiations would begin immediately and could be concluded in the coming weeks.

It is worth remembering that the meeting between the two leaders took place at around 3:30 pm (local time), at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC), in parallel with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Leaders’ Summit.
