Federal Police (PF) may stop issuing passports in Brazil by the end of this year

A may stop issuing passports in Brazil until the end of this year due to lack of budgetary resources. The information was confirmed by which claims to be acting in an “active and coordinated” way to guarantee the continuity of the service. In a note, the ministry reported that it “closely monitors the budget situation” and maintains constant dialogue with the federal government’s economic team to ensure the necessary resources to maintain the issuance of documents. The PF has not yet officially commented on the case.

According to Agência Brasil, the possible stoppage is related to insufficient funds allocated to the creation and issuance of passports, a process that involves costs with materials, technology, logistics and labor. Without a budget supplement, the service may be temporarily suspended. The Ministry of Justice reiterated that issuing passports is an essential service to citizens and assured that all measures are being adopted to avoid any interruption.

Currently, the cost to issue a common passport is R$257.25, which can reach R$514.50 in specific cases, such as when the holder does not present the previous document. Despite charging the fee, maintaining the service depends on the PF budget, which is responsible for covering operational expenses. This would not be the first time that the service has been affected by budget constraints. In November 2022, the PF temporarily suspended the issuance of passports after exhausting the budget allocated to preparing the documents — at the time, around R$217.8 million had already been fully committed.
