A man in an electric wheelchair died this Tuesday (28) after being hit by a car driven by Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martínez, from Inter Milan, in the province of Como, Italian police reported.
According to initial information released by police authorities, the wheelchair appears to have strayed into the path of the vehicle. They continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
“The car driven by Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez hit a man who was in an electric wheelchair traveling on a cycle path next to a road in the province of Como,” police said.
“Martínez stopped his car to help the man, who died before the ambulance arrived.”
Inter canceled the press conference scheduled for Tuesday, before their home match against Fiorentina, in the Italian Championship, scheduled for Wednesday (29).
Martínez, 27, has one cap for Spain and plays as a reserve goalkeeper for Inter. He joined the club last year after a spell at Genoa.
Inter did not comment on the accident.
