The decision was taken during an emergency meeting at Palácio do Planalto, called to discuss the public security crisis in the State
The federal government authorized this Tuesday (28) the transfer of prisoners to maximum security federal penitentiaries, after a police operation against prison left at least 64 people dead. The decision was taken during an emergency meeting at Palácio do Planalto, called to discuss the public security crisis in the State. The transfer request was made by governor Cláudio Castro (PL), who participated in the meeting by telephone. According to the government, around ten inmates should be transferred initially, a number that could increase in the coming hours.
A federal government commission will go to Rio this Wednesday (29). The delegation will be made up of ministers Rui Costa (Civil House) and Ricardo Lewandowski (Justice), in addition to the director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues.
This Tuesday’s meeting was coordinated by the acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, and was attended by Rui Costa, Gleisi Hoffmann, Jorge Messias (Attorney General of the Union), Macaé Evaristo (Human Rights) and Sidônio Palmeira (Secom), as well as representatives from the Army, Ministry of Justice and Federal Police. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva did not participate, as he was returning from a trip to Asia.
All participants denied having received any request for support from the state government for the police operation. In a statement, the Civil House reiterated that there was no prior consultation on the action. The governor stated in the morning that the State acted “alone” and that he requested logistical support from armored vehicles on three occasions, without success. The Ministry of Defense responded that the sending of armored vehicles could only occur under a Law and Order Guarantee (GLO) decree, a measure that is not currently under discussion.
