The federal government decided to send the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costaand the Minister of Justice, , this Wednesday (29) for an emergency meeting with the governor Claudio Castro (PL). The meeting was requested by Rui Costa after the worsening of the public security crisis in the state and will take place one day after the police operation that resulted in 64 deaths and 81 arrests, the most lethal in Rio de Janeiro’s history.
According to a note released by the Civil House, the decision was taken after an emergency meeting at Palácio do Planalto on Tuesday night (28). The meeting was attended by the acting president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and ministers Rui Costa (Casa Civil), Gleisi Hoffmann (Secretariat of Institutional Relations), Jorge Messias (Attorney General of the Union), Macaé Evaristo (Human Rights) and Sidônio Palmeira (Secretariat of Social Communication), as well as the executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Manoel Carlos.
During the meeting, the federal government reported that it was not consulted or received a request for support from the state administration to carry out the operation against the Comando Vermelho, which took place in several communities in Rio. “The federal police and military forces reiterated that there was no consultation or request for support from the state government of Rio de Janeiro to carry out the operation”, stated the Civil House in an official note.
Planalto also informed Governor Cláudio Castro that there are places available in federal prisons to receive highly dangerous criminals identified during investigations. Earlier, Castro declared that the state’s police forces identified inmates articulating, from within Rio de Janeiro’s prisons, retaliatory actions against organized crime after Tuesday’s offensive. The ministers’ visit takes place amid political tension between the federal government and the government of Rio, after Planalto was charged with responding to opposition criticism and the high number of deaths in the operation.
