Chelsea beats 'Wolves' and Liverpool prolongs crisis by withdrawing from the English League Cup

The most exciting game of the fourth round of the League Cup took place in Wolverhampton, where the Vítor Pereira’s team reached the break 3-0 downbut ended up defeated 4-3.

Vítor Pereira’s Wolverhampton still threatened to begin a recovery against Chelsea, but was eliminated this Wednesday from the English Football League Cup, while Liverpool worsened the crisis and failed to reach the quarter-finals.

Os ‘Reds’, record holders for the competition’s trophies (10), continue to not get along with Crystal Palace this season and, after losing the Super Cup and the Premier League match, they were once again defeated by the Eagles, at home, 3-0, registering their sixth defeat in the last seven meetings in all competitions.

Finalist last season, the team led by Arne Slot ‘succumbed’ at Anfield Road with goals from Senegalese Ismaila Sarr (42nd and 45th minute) and Spaniard Yeremy Pino (87th), in addition to ending the match reduced to 10 players, due to the expulsion of young Amara Nallo in the final phase.

‘Wolves’ trailed 3-0 at half-time

The most exciting game of the fourth round of the League Cup took place in Wolverhampton, where the Vítor Pereira’s team reached the break 3-0 down, with goals from Brazilians Andrey Santos (05 minutes) and Estêvão (41), and Tyrique George (15), but he managed to reduce it through Nigerian Toluwalase Arokodare (48) and Norwegian David Moller Wolfe (73).

With Pedro Neto on the field – and shortly after the expulsion of Liam Delap -, the ‘blues’ gained greater comfort through Jamie Gittens (89 minutes), but Wolfe made the Londoners ‘tremble’ with a ‘double’ (90+1), making it 4-3 final, in a match in which José Sá and Toti Gomes played initially for the home team and Rodrigo Gomes entered in the first half.

Golo art no City-Swansea

Without any Portuguese in the ‘eleven’, Manchester City was surprised in the opening moments of the visit to Wales, where Portuguese midfielder Gonçalo Franco put Swansea ahead (12 minutes).

However, Belgian Jérémy Doku (39), Egyptian Omar Marmoush (77) and Frenchman Rayan Cherki (90+3) ensured the ‘citizens’ passage with a 3-1 victory.

Newcastle and Arsenal also move on

Newcastle, holder of the trophy, and Arsenal were the other teams that secured passage this Wednesday, both with 2-0 victories over Tottenham and Brighton, respectively.

Ethan Nwaneri (57 minutes) and Bukayo Saka (76) built the Gunners’ triumph over the Seagulls, while the Swiss Fabian Schär (24) and the German ‘giant’ Nick Woltemade (50) ‘won’ against the Spurs’.

On Tuesday, the Marco Silva’s Fulham and Brentford had already qualified for the ‘quarters’, as did Cardiff Citythird placed in the third tier and the only ‘survivor’ in competition outside the Premier League.
