The proposal for a minute of silence for victims of the police operation did not turn into a debate between councilors at the São Paulo City Council this Wednesday (29). The tribute was not approved. The discussion took place in the House plenary. The councilor (PT) proposed paying tribute to the more than 100 people killed in the operation. The proposal had the support of other left-wing parliamentarians. But right-wing councilors defended paying homage only to the four murdered police officers. “Whoever shoots at the police really has to die”, declared (PL). “(I hope) the criminals will cry in the devil’s lap”, stated (União). “Criminals will not have a moment of silence in this house”, said (União).

“There is no death penalty in Brazil”, replied Luna. “You are not judges. A criminal is only after due legal process. This is not the Wild West”, criticized Luana Alves (Psol). “It is absurd to have to say in this House that there are not only criminals in the favela”, defended Keit Lima (Psol).
