Trump and Xi: what was decided (and unresolved) between Washington and Beijing

Explainer

SIC commentator Luís Ribeiro analyzes the elements that were on the “menu” of the Presidents of the USA and China.

Donald Trump says the meeting with the Chinese President in South Korea was a success. The United States leader agreed to reduce tariffs on China by 10 percentage points, from 57 to 47%. Beijing has committed to resuming soybean purchases and relaxing control over rare earths for a year. Still, there is no final agreement signed and several sensitive issues remain to be resolved, explains Luís Ribeiro.

“There were some positive points, but the truth is that there has not yet been an agreement signed. These positive points are, for example, the one-year suspension of exports of rare earths by China. China controls something like 90% of rare earths refining and 70% of submining.”

Luís Ribeiro says that Trump won another important point, which was the blockingthe import of American soybeans, with only half of American soy being sold to China.

“Russia is one of the biggest failures of this meeting. Trump, always so effusive in wanting to show service, wanting to show victories, said something like we talked a lot about this issue of the war between Russia and Ukraine, we will continue talking, but there is not much we can do for now”.

These are some of the topics under analysis in this Thursday’s Jornal do Dia explainer, with journalist Luís Ribeiro.
