King Charles III has begun a “formal process” to remove the titles of his brother, Prince Andrew, who will now be addressed as André Mountbatten Windsor. The hitherto prince will also leave his residence at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, Buckingham Palace announced.
According to the statement issued this Thursday by Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British King, Charles III “started today a formal process to remove Prince Andrew’s status, titles and decorations.”
At stake are the titles of prince, Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh and the status of His Royal Highnessin addition to decorations such as the Grand Cross of the Victorian Order.
The measure does not affect daughters of Charles III’s brother, the princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who maintain their titles.
The title removal process will be carried out through royal warrants carried out by Lord Chancellor, who is Minister for Justiceavoiding the need to debate and approve legislation in parliament.
The King’s brother had already voluntarily resignedtwo weeks ago, to the use of their titles, and in 2022.
Carlos III’s decision was triggered by André’s friendship with the North American tycoon, who was arrested in 2019 and convicted of sexual crimes against minors, and for which he was forced to have sex with André when he was 17 years old.
In August 2021, Giuffre against the Duke of York, for sexual abuse, alleging that she was forced to have sex with him at Epstein’s mansion in New York, London and the US Virgin Islands.
These cases weakened André’s position with British public opinion.
According to, Charles III decided to act now because, although André continues to deny the accusations against him, “it is considered that serious errors of judgment have occurred”.
In the statement, it is also announced that the lease contract in the mansion he occupies on the Windsor Castle estate will be revoked and that he will move “to alternative private accommodation”.
“These reprimands are considered necessarydespite Prince Andrew continue to deny the accusationss”, said the informative note.
“Their Majesties wish to make it clear that their thoughts and their deepest solidarity have been, and will continue to be, with the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse”, the statement further highlighted.
