I have the same pain as the police officer’s mother, says woman who lost her son in Rio

A mother of a 20 year old who is among the 121 dead in the mega-operation of the security forces in Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday (28), stated that Her pain is the same as that of the mother of one of the police officers killed in the operation.

After three days of Operation Containment, 100 of the 121 bodies have already been identified. All underwent autopsies, but the reports must be released within 10 to 15 business days.

“I see a lot of people talking about the mother of one of the police officers who died, right? Her pain is no different from mine, because she is a mother like me and like all the mothers of the bodies that were there. So we also need to be heard”, said Tauã Brito in an interview with Itatiaia at the exit of the IML (Instituto Médico-Legal Afrânio Peixoto), in the center of Rio.

Tauã said that, during the operation, he received a message from his son asking for help, saying he was trapped in the woods. “He sent me a message asking to get him out and that he was trapped. Many who tried to turn themselves in died. In his mind, I think he thought: “If my mother is here, they will take me to prison.”

Due to the exchange of fire, the family was unable to arrive in time and the young man was killed. “They took away my right to reach my son and make him turn himself in. We only managed to enter the forest after eight o’clock at night, after the police left”, lamented the mother.

He was found around one in the morning in the woods with a gunshot wound to the head, a rope mark on his arm and one of his arms cut. “I never supported the life my son led, the choices he made, but As a mother, I would never turn my back on him”, he stated.

The mother also criticized the e asked favela residents for change. “We also need change to happen, because governing a state isn’t just about arriving in a favela and taking lives, it’s much more than that. It’s about providing opportunities, vision so that they can see different things than the reality of a favela,” he declared.
