The Minister of Cities, said that the 15% interest rate could kill home financing for the middle class.
The criticism of Selic was made at a dinner held on Wednesday (29) with businesspeople, in São Paulo.
“How was the house financed in Brazil since the 1960s? The model was anchored in savings. When the interest rate is very high, it is unfavorable to keep the money in the account. And, today, anyone can easily transfer their resources to something much more profitable”, he stated.
According to him, if interest rates continue at their current level, savings “will die.” “And if she dies, there will be no more funding to finance home ownership in Brazil, mainly for the middle class.”
This is one of President Lula’s bets to overcome the resistance of this segment in next year’s campaign, when he will run for re-election.
In the conversation, the minister also mentioned financing modalities for infrastructure works, in areas such as sanitation, mobility and urban development.
“This year alone, there were R$30 billion in incentivized debentures made by the Ministry of Cities in the country’s infrastructure works. And we are going to expand much more. There are several projects that are about to be released, such as in the areas of sanitation and mobility”, he stated.
