Government spends R$300,000 on propaganda to combat crime – 11/01/2025 – Brasília Hoje

The government (PT) spent at least R$337,000 to publish propaganda pieces on social media about actions to combat organized crime after the .

The amount was paid to , owner of platforms such as and , to expand the reach of publications on the topic.

The government’s campaign has two posts: one of them defends the approval of the Security PEC, proposed by the Ministry of Justice as one of the Lula administration’s main plans to combat organized crime; another states that it is only possible to act in this area with intelligence and .

The amount of R$ 337 thousand was spent in just three days, from Wednesday (29) until Friday night (31). The payment increased the circulation of pieces in the networks controlled by Meta. The posts have been seen by millions of users since then.

The figures are published by Meta itself on a transparency page about advertising on its networks. The numbers are an estimate of expenses made by advertisers for each post.

Sponsoring social media posts is known as boosting. Users pay for certain content to reach more users. In the case of Facebook and Instagram, paid publications appear on Meta’s advertising page, owner of both platforms.

The government is trying to react to recurring pressure on the PT administration regarding the public security agenda. The issue gave new energy to the right, which once again came together in support of (), governor of Rio.

The movement has as its backdrop next year’s electoral dispute and the fear of the impact of the episode on the image of the government and the PT administration, which was on a positive streak.

The and driven by Meta’s networks makes indirect complaints to the Rio de Janeiro government and defends the approval of the PEC.

The video says that to attack the crime you need to aim for the head, , and that organized crime is one of Brazil’s biggest problems and “destroys families, oppresses residents and spreads drugs and violence in cities”.

The campaign also says that killing criminals is not the solution and argues that it is necessary to attack the brains and hearts of criminal groups, citing as an example the Public Ministry, with the participation of the Federal Revenue Service, against the (Primeiro Comando da Capital) in the fuel sector and the financial market.

The Security PEC, sent to Congress in April this year, is currently under analysis by the Chamber’s Special Committee. The assessment is that the process has progressed at a slow pace. The expectation is that the text will be taken to the plenary by the end of the year

The government’s idea is to constitutionalize the Susp (Single Public Security System), establishing minimum guidelines to be followed by security agencies across the country.
