In a duel that pitted two promising players from the Corinthians academy face to face, the favorite Inter Milan, owned by full-back Carlos Augusto, visited the threatened Hellas Verona, owned by striker Giovane. The visitors won 2-1, with an own goal in stoppage time, this Sunday (2), at the Marcantonio Bentegodi stadium, in the 10th round of the Italian Championship.
The result led to 21 points, just one behind leaders Napoli, who drew with Como on Saturday (1st). Roma (21), who visit Milan (18) this Sunday, at 4:45 pm (Brasília time), could reach 24 and take the top of the table. Verona, on the other hand, remains without a win and with just five points, in the relegation zone.
Highlights of ex-Corinthians
Giovane, who had played little with the Corinthians shirt and had his contract terminated last July, was one of the highlights of the match and scored Verona’s equalizer — his first in Italy —, in the first half, getting the better of a dispute with defender Bastoni, from the Italian team, and hitting Sommer’s angle.
The 21-year-old Brazilian led the hosts’ attacks and drew applause from the local fans. He also helped clear balls in defense when Inter were pressing, and almost caused Bisseck to be sent off when he was fouled on a counterattack, which resulted in a yellow card that was much contested by the hosts.
Despite the brutal technical difference between the teams and the different campaigns in the competition, the match was surprisingly balanced, with Verona creating good chances in order to take points from the Milan team.
At first, it seemed like it would be a walk for the visitors, who in less than 15 minutes were already leading 1-0, with a great goal from Zielinski in a rehearsed corner, and had finished four other times with Lautaro Martínez, Bonny and Zielinski himself.
Hellas, however, grew in the match and Inter only threatened again in the final stretch. In desperation, the team led by Chivu abused the sprinklers in the area. When it seemed that the match was heading towards an unexpected draw, an unpretentious cross from Barella, in the 48th minute, deflected off Frese and the ball ended up in the goal, decreeing the hard-earned victory for the visitors.
