Inpe records a 31% drop in the destruction of federal Conservation Units in the Amazon and 45% in the Cerrado
Data released by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research) on Thursday (October 30, 2025) shows a 31% drop in deforestation in federal UCs (Conservation Units) in the Amazon and 45% in the Cerrado, from August 2024 to July 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year. The numbers represent the lowest deforestation rate recorded in the Amazon since 2008 and the 2nd smallest in the Cerrado since the creation of ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation) in 2007.
In the Legal Amazon as a whole, the drop was 11.08% compared to the previous period, representing the 3rdª lowest rate since 1988. In the Cerrado, the general reduction reached 11.49%.
According to the government, the reduction was due to the strengthening of inspection and protection actions in conservation areas.
The areas play a strategic role in combating climate change, as changes in land use, mainly deforestation, constitute the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil. The country has a goal of reaching zero deforestation by 2030.
The minister of , , celebrated the data and highlighted that the drop in deforestation in federal UCs in 2025 “confirms the importance of these areas for protecting our biomes, biodiversity and ways of life. By maintaining ecosystem services — climate stability and rainfall regulation — they benefit the entire society and the Brazilian economy itself”.
